'Virtual selling, learning, networking have become more important'

There was reasonable traction on the platform even before the pandemic, but during the pandemic, members realised that it was just not okay to think about jobs; it is very important to think about skills

Over the past decade, LinkedIn has evolved from being a professional networking platform to a social media giant that offers a place to up-skill, post opinions, read news and so on. The company currently has over 69 million users in India. Between February and August 2020 or post covid-19, LinkedIn added five million members in India — the spike, in many ways, underlined economic distress during the pandemic. Going ahead, the platform wants to keep focussing on the community and play a bigger role in the future of work, computer science and engineering Gupta, country manager, India, at LinkedIn told Mint during an interview.

In the last six months, virtual selling, learning, networking became important, particularly during the lockdown. The platform’s relevance has jumped multifold. Our professional community is the number one priority, both from a member's perspective as well as from the government agencies’ standpoint. We recently tied up with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) so that we can help with re-skilling.

COLUMN-Big funds circle EdTech as post-pandemic mega-trend :Mike Dolan

In the race to pick mega-trends amplified by this year's pandemic, education, or at least new technology within that market, is being circled by asset managers seeking alternatives to the already super-expensive tech and pharma sectors.

EdTech -- which has been growing since universities moved to provide open-access Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, more than a decade ago -- is one sector expected to be supercharged by the COVID-19 shock. And the story goes well beyond emergency home-schooling and online teaching during lockdowns.

The investment case computer engineering salary on two areas of education whose expansion the pandemic is expected to accelerate.

First is the private provision of tertiary or lifelong training as governments struggle to keep funding rising demand, mainly from developing countries. And second is a need for career-long reskilling of workers due to disruptions wrought by automation and digitisation of workplaces.

What has caught the eye of investors -- many of whom are also involved in 'sustainable' investing, another emerging mega-trend -- is the role of EdTech companies in developing artificial intelligence and machine-learning technologies in areas like e-classrooms, virtual reality or interactive modules.

Strains Small/Medium Business Security Teams, Report Says

Small and midsized businesses (SMBs) are under increasing strains caused by the huge work-from-home surge resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, says a new report.

The report, 2020 SMB IT Security, comes from computer science vs computer engineering security specialist Untangle, which in its 2019 report highlighted how cloud-based services and the increasing number of branch office networks are promoting the rise of software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN).

This year, familiar themes are reported -- such as budget constraints hampering security -- but COVID-19 introduces a new factor as most businesses have shifted at least part of their workforces to remote work, which some plan on continuing post-pandemic. That latter finding reaffirms what some have referred to as "the new normal" of permanent remote work.

"As the abnormal becomes our new normal, SMBs need to approach remote work by using a combination of cloud-based applications and on-premises solutions to keep employees and systems safe, and ensure business continuity," said Scott Devens, CEO at Untangle.

Devens touted technologies with multi-layered network security tools and hybrid network infrastructures, including SD-WAN, to avoid large-scale network vulnerabilities for organizations of all sizes. Untangle sells an SD-WAN router among its security wares.

Nepal To Receive Its First Wide Gauge Railway Engine, Coaches Today

Two sets of railways including engine and coaches to revive railway connection between Jayanagar in India and Kurtha in Janakpur, Nepal are set to be delivered on Friday. Balaram Mishra, Director General of Department of Railways, said the set will be delivered to Nepal by the Konkan Railways of India later in the afternoon on September 18.

"Last evening it arrived at Jayanagar in India. It will arrive in Kurtha of Janakpur in Nepal later this afternoon. Till now we haven't faced or received any technical or other issues," Mishra told ANI. Nepali Railways officials have reached Janakpur on Thursday to receive the railways, the official further added.

The new set of railways procured from Konkan Company of India is expected to dock at Janakpur sub-station at around 3 pm on Friday afternoon. As the rail is set to arrive at its destination in Nepal, security at various points, through which it would travel has been increased.

"Today we will just be receiving the railway sets. There are no other formal or any kind of programs but the officials from Konkan Railways also will be arriving today. Company's technical team is driving the rail to dock it to Nepal," Mishra said.

Nepal's Railway Department has procured rail engines and coaches from Konkan Railways for NPR 84,65,000. On Friday, it will arrive at Janakpur and then will begin its return journey back to India's Jaynagar. "Parking or holding spot for the rail is yet to be determined so both the set will return back to India after they arrive in Nepal this afternoon. We have a total of four parking spots for it -- Jaynagar, Inarwa, Khajuri and Kurtha," Binod Jha, site engineer of computer science vs engineering from Nepal Railways, confirmed.

The railways operated using diesel and electricity, each set has five bogies (coaches). Out of them, one is AC coach while three are general bogies. One of the set's engine has been designed with the capacity to accommodate passengers. "By combining the five bogies, it now bears the capacity of 1,300 passengers at a time," Jha added.

The 34-kilometre broad gauge railway track has been built with India's assistance. It would revive the earlier Janakpur-Jayanagar railways connection between India and Nepal. Further work of extending railways track from Kurtha to Bijalapur of Mahottari measuring 17 kilometres is underway.

Quality of clinical management of children diagnosed with malaria

Appropriate clinical management of malaria in children is critical for preventing progression to severe disease and for reducing the continued high burden of malaria mortality. This study aimed to assess the quality of care provided to children under 5 diagnosed with malaria across 9 sub-Saharan African countries.

We used data from the Service Provision Assessment (SPA) survey. SPAs are nationally representative facility surveys capturing quality of sick-child care, facility readiness, and provider and patient characteristics. The data set contained 24,756 direct clinical observations of outpatient sick-child visits across 9 countries, including Uganda (2007), Rwanda (2007), Namibia (2009), Kenya (2010), Malawi (2013), Senegal (2013–2017), Ethiopia (2014), Tanzania (2015), and Democratic Republic of the Congo (2018). We assessed the proportion of children with a malaria diagnosis who received a blood test diagnosis and an appropriate antimalarial. We used multilevel logistic regression to assess facility and provider and patient characteristics associated with these outcomes. Subgroup analyses with the 2013–2018 country surveys only were conducted for all outcomes.

Children observed were on average 20.5 months old and were most commonly diagnosed with respiratory infection (47.7%), malaria (29.7%), and/or gastrointestinal infection (19.7%). Among the 7,340 children with a malaria diagnosis, 32.5% (95% CI: 30.3%–34.7%) received both a blood-test–based diagnosis and an appropriate antimalarial. The proportion of children with a blood test diagnosis and an appropriate antimalarial ranged from 3.4% to 57.1% across countries. In the more recent surveys (2013–2018), 40.7% (95% CI: 37.7%–43.6%) of children with a malaria diagnosis received both a blood test diagnosis and appropriate antimalarial. Roughly 20% of children diagnosed with malaria received no antimalarial at all, and nearly 10% received oral software engineering vs computer science, which is not recommended because of concerns regarding parasite resistance.

Receipt of a blood test diagnosis and appropriate antimalarial was positively correlated with being seen at a facility with diagnostic equipment in stock (adjusted OR 3.67; 95% CI: 2.72–4.95) and, in the 2013–2018 subsample, with being seen at a facility with Artemisinin Combination Therapies (ACTs) in stock (adjusted OR 1.60; 95% CI:1.04–2.46). However, even if all children diagnosed with malaria were seen by a trained provider at a facility with diagnostics and medicines in stock, only a predicted 37.2% (95% CI: 34.2%–40.1%) would have received a blood test and appropriate antimalarial (44.4% for the 2013–2018 subsample). Study limitations include the lack of confirmed malaria test results for most survey years, the inability to distinguish between a diagnosis of uncomplicated or severe malaria, the absence of other relevant indicators of quality of care including dosing and examinations, and that only 9 countries were studied.

How Cloud Computing Can Deal With Lightning Strikes and Hackers

More and more of our daily lives takes place online, from banking and schooling to working and family gatherings, even more so amid the coronavirus pandemic. The cloud is the invisible computing architecture that keeps many of these digital platforms and tools running smoothly. Really, being in the cloud just means storing data on “someone else’s computer.” A few major tech companies run massive global networks of data centers, linked with ocean-spanning fiber-optic cables and complex systems of integrated hardware and software. So there is no single cloud per se. Rather, companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google each run their own systems, almost like parallel internets. The risks of a company’s whole cloud system going down at once are computer science engineering, though isolated outages of particular cloud services do happen.

Many internet users are seeing firsthand how disruptive it can be when the online tools they are relying on unexpectedly go offline or experience other bugs. For instance, when the videoconferencing software Zoom went offline for several hours one day in late August 2020, virtual classes around the United States were disrupted.

Demand for IT contractors pulled nearer to growth in August

IT contractor demand continued its climb towards growth in August, pointing upwards for the fourth month in a row thanks to key sectors of the economy emerging from covid-19 lockdown .

In fact, demand for IT skills on a contract basis rose from 40.2 to 45.8 -- still some way off the 50.0 growth threshold, but representing its highest score since the pandemic hit.Agency staffing body the REC, which released these figures from its index yesterday, says Technology as a whole is firmly among the sectors “coming back strongly” since is computer science engineering was eased.

Agency staffing body the REC, which released these figures from its index yesterday, says Technology as a whole is firmly among the sectors “coming back strongly” since lockdown was eased.

But in an online update, the REC’s chief executive Neil Carberry said temporary hiring was “much stronger” than permanent hiring, and seemingly not only because of covid restrictions easing.

“Temp always bounces back faster in the early stages of a recovery -- we think this is especially pronounced this time as clients see demand now, but have no clarity about the medium term, given the virus and -- increasingly -- no-deal Brexit risk.”

Digital infrastructure and service to ensure green Opex in 5G Era

Home quarantine during the first half of 2020 would have been very hard without internet connectivity. Recovering from the impact of Covid-19 pandemic will take time, and this has made us realise how necessary it is to have a digital ecosystem for both mobile operators and governments. This ecosystem would help in providing digital services and showing social responsibility to assure network healthiness during the pandemic. Such digitalisation needs a fast 5G network evolution. In the Middle East, we are lucky because of the early deployment of 5G networks. In the last two years, mobile carriers have deployed more than 10K 5G sites in the Middle East, which promises more B2C, B2B and what can you do with a computer science degree in the region’s telecom industry. However, 5G also brings operators some key challenges in terms of double power consumption, increase in equipment, and thousands of extra configurations for 5G mobile network sites, equipment and setup.

Therefore, the question here is how to control these challenges while achieving a 5G best network performance?

The answer is that digital transformation in network infrastructure and services have become a necessity.

Engineering skills transfer key to industrial recovery claims report

A concerted effort to drive the transfer of engineering skills from one sector to another will be key to enabling UK industry to recover from Covid-19  according to a report published by construction industry skills body, the ECITB (The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board).

The report – Skills Transferability in the Engineering Construction Industry – sheds light on the similarities in skills and competences of engineers in the many sectors that support Britain’s energy and processing infrastructure, from renewables to oil and gas, nuclear and pharmaceuticals. It also identifies barriers to skills transferability, such as ingrained workplace attitudes and recruitment practices that computer engineering jobs trades and occupations unnecessarily and place unhelpful restriction on the mobility of workers.

With the most severe economic impact from Covid-19 felt in the oil and gas industry – a sector already under pressure – the ECITB asserts that with proper planning and coordination, the pandemic presents an opportunity to accelerate transition to a carbon-free economy. It warns however that failure to act quickly, risk the loss of thousands of engineers who have the requisite skills to deliver decarbonisation.
