NASA wants to hear your ideas for engineering

When NASA sends astronauts back to the Moon, they’ll need a place to go to the bathroom when they reach the lunar surface. And in order to create the best Moon toilet the Solar System has to offer, NASA wants to hear from members of the public who might have ideas on the best way to manufacture an easy-to-use lunar restroom.

Today, NASA is announcing the “Lunar Loo Challenge,” a competition in partnership with HeroX to come up with the best space toilet for the agency’s future human lunar lander. As part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to send the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024, the lander will take astronauts from lunar orbit down to the Moon’s surface. That means the restroom on board has to be versatile: it will need to work in orbit, where the astronauts will be weightless, and also when astronauts are experiencing one-sixth of Earth’s gravity on the lunar surface. And without much gravity, things can get a little messy if you don’t prepare.

After more than half a century of sending humans to space, NASA has gotten pretty good at building space toilets. But the agency wanted to look outside the box, especially since bathroom technology has advanced a lot here on Earth. “We wanted to see what’s out there — what the unknown unknowns are and put the power of the crowd to find those citizen scientists who’ve got different perspectives,” jobs with a computer science degree, project manager for the Lunar Loo Challenge who is working on the Human Lunar Lander System at NASA, tells The Verge. NASA plans to award up to $35,000 in prizes, and some form of the winning space throne may be included on the lander.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY 2020

On International Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate a selection of women at McLaren Racing who worked on the VentilatorChallengeUK (VCUK) consortium project – a collective of UK-based Formula 1 teams, engine manufacturers and their respective technology arms – who have worked hard to answer the UK Government’s calls for additional ventilators in response to the covid-19 crisis.

My main role was sourcing harnesses, electrical components, fabricated items and injection information technology vs computer science plastic parts. We used many of our F1 suppliers to help support this project with one key example being our harness supplier in Norfolk. This supplier worked well outside of their comfort zone making up to 500 harnesses a week to support the build, when our usual F1 order is a maximum of six sets a year.

The team worked collaboratively educating other teams at speed in terms of ways of working and problem solving. For example, some teams were working with mould tools that had never been designed to withstand the level of output now being expected. McLaren design and the machine shop teams’ support were crucial in the manufacture of a brand-new mould tool to help expedite manufacture and improve part quality. We worked closely with our consortium team members daily to ensure that we had parts to supply the build line.

The Top Five Engineering Challenges Facing Wearable Medical Devices

Many companies are working on parts of patient monitor networks, if not the entire network. They envision secure connections to wireless networks that let healthcare providers remotely track patients’ progress. Today’s wearable medical products can also act as personal emergency-response systems This lets patients them leave hospitals sooner, eliminates many connectors and cables (not to mention clinic visits) and gives doctors reams of accurate data.

But as usual, there are some hurdles in going from the concept to a profitable product. There are five main design challenges common to patient monitors: power consumption (or battery life), portability (or size), patient safety, how much does a computer engineer make, and integration.

Virtual summer camp aims to get young women, youth prepared for careers in computer science

A virtual summer camp aims to increase the number of young women and youth skilled in computer programming to get ready for well-paying jobs of the future. The CWS Refugee Resettlement, James Madison University's Computer Science Department, and John Stapleton, a computer science teacher from Harrisonburg High School decided rather than cancel plans for a week-long in-person camp, they'd do one online instead.

Now, the two-week long virtual camp includes 18 what is the difference between computer science and computer engineering High School students of refugee backgrounds. According to an organizer of the camp, CWS received funding from the Virginia Office of Newcomer Services (ONS) to provide computers capable of downloading software necessary for coding. The JMU Computer Science Department loaned computers to several of the youth.

The camp started on June 1 and continues through June 12. Every morning, the virtual campers get a Zoom lesson led by a professor and then hear from a guest speaker who uses computer programming. Following a break, students work on projects.

Guest speakers include local tech entrepreneurs, computer engineers who create medical devices, computer scientists who've studied bias in algorithms, and scientists using programming to look at DNR markers in people more susceptible to severe COVID-19.

Sylvester native inspiring young students with engineering career

A Sylvester native is being recognized nationally for his engineering work.

Dr. Mark McKelvin may have been born and raised in Sylvester but the once small-town boy always knew he was going to do big things. “I like to make an analogy because we are in South Georgia and we like football, right? We love football, I love football. We start young, we start when kids are in primary school, elementary school and definitely by the time they’re in middle school, they’re on their way to being good athletes and so forth,” said McKelvin.

A football player himself, the Worth County High School graduate said that football wasn’t the only thing he started at a young age.

“That was always something that I wanted to do, was to inspire all of our community because we have a lot of talent in South Georgia and I want to be an exemplar of that,” said McKelvin.

Dr. McKelvin went on to get his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Clark Atlanta University. Then he earned his masters and Ph.D. across the country at the University of California, Berkeley and then starting his career at NASA after graduation. computer engineer vs computer science, which is a senior project leader at the Aerospace Corporation. In my work, I primarily support the United States Airforce at the Space and Missiles Center,” explained McKelvin.

Cloud Computing: Deployment Models

Arange of cloud models are available for deploying and managing enterprise cloud computing environments. Some enterprises demand that sensitive, mission-critical apps remain on-premises, while others can access cloud features through a private cloud, and others still may be offloaded to the public cloud. Over the past two years, management solutions that support hybrid cloud environments and, increasingly, multi-cloud management have grown in importance.

Listed below are the key deployment models for cloud computing environments, as identified by jobs with computer science degree.

Public clouds are computing services typically associated with leading public cloud services, like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, which are available over the public internet under a pay-per-usage model. Public cloud IaaS solutions include on-demand compute and on-demand storage, in which clients pay for the capacity they use. Public cloud solutions are attractive to customers because there is no upfront capital expenditure (capex), and providers typically offer very flexible contracting models.

UK Creating New Engineering Tracks to Meet Kentucky's Talent Demand

Earlier this month, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) released results of a study assessing engineering workforce trends relative to the offerings and effectiveness of engineering programs of Kentucky schools, colleges and universities.

The study found that Kentucky engineering jobs are growing slightly faster than engineering jobs across the is computer science engineering, and that earnings for engineers are fairly competitive with regional states. This is good news for those aspiring to and training for the engineering profession and planning on practicing in Kentucky. Engineering programs across the commonwealth will move to fill tech force gaps as they have always done, but we expect to do more than that. We should be expected to do more than that.

For example, the increased prevalence of automation on the factory floor and the emergence of complex international supply chains has caused fundamental shifts in what engineers must know and be able to do to drive the manufacturing sector of our economy.
