Cloud executive demand soars due to Covid-19, data shows

According to findings from executive search company Leadership Capital Group, queries for senior cloud executives in the digital realm are up 224% since March.

The company said there was an ‘acute need for organisations to execute an effective cloud strategy.’ Findings were based on search requests for cloud executives globally between March and July 2020. Job titles in particular demand included chief technology officer (CTO), chief digital revenue officer, SVP cloud, as well as EVPs and managing directors in infrastructure services, cloud services, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Marc Lewis, CEO of Leadership Capital Group, said ‘steady growth’ in cloud-based search requests had been replaced by ‘skyrocketed’ demand during the pandemic.

“Finding the right person is like the difference between a developer and an architect,” he added. “What you really want is someone who is like a general manager of cloud services who actually understands the whole ecosystem. They need to evaluate what things are computer engineering vs computer science, what things should go to a specialised cloud service, and what can go to the mega providers.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Receives UCLA Library Grant to Develop Affordable Course Materials

clarice Aiello, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been awarded a one-time $5,000 grant from the UCLA Library’s Affordable Course Materials Initiative to develop materials for her forthcoming course on quantum mechanics for engineers.

She is one of three professors to receive the award, which is made in conjunction with OpenUCLA, the UCLA Library’s Centennial Initiative. The awards program provides support to professors who create original, open educational resources that eliminate the need for students to purchase course textbooks.

“The library’s ACMI awards are meant to encourage faculty to create affordable course materials by compensating them for the time it takes to develop them,” said associate university librarian Alison Scott, who administers the program. “We have successfully collaborated with instructors to help them achieve their educational objectives, and we have eased the financial burden for thousands of UCLA students.”

Aiello, a quantum engineer at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, is interested in how quantum physics informs biology computer science average salary. Through the support of the OpenUCLA ACMI, Aiello will create an open educational resource for her winter 2021 course, “Quantum Mechanics for Engineers.” Librarian Renee Romero will work with Aiello during the duration of her award period.

Nine women to watch from U of T Engineering's class of 2020

One graduate designed tiny robotic scissors controlled by external magnetic fields using a joystick – no cables, wires or any other attachment required. Another used her passion for computer engineering vs computer science to help protect nuclear power plants from threats.

And one grad – in a new collaborative engineering education specialization offered by the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering and U of T's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education – was a medal-winning, world-class runner who competed at the Pan Am Games in Toronto as well as in Venezuela, Qatar and Spain.

They are just three of the nine women who appeared on the faculty’s “Grads to Watch 2020” list – each selected by their home department or institute.

Writers Liz Do and Tyler Irving caught up with the grads as they prepared to take next step in their careers.

West Van robotics students turn to virtual worlds for engineering challenges

Inside a giant ship that’s just taken off from the planet’s surface, the pilot looks down on a mountain valley below. It’s dotted with small trees, and glacier-covered peaks loom in the distance.

As the ship flies down the valley, another flying craft comes into view, thrusters firing. The two ships head back to a small glacial lake, where the second space ship descends, slowly, on to its frozen surface.

The video, which includes being in the middle of a realistic world, might feel familiar to teenaged gamers.

This virtual world is one with a difference though – both the environment and all of the components, including the spaceships, have been created on a special online platform by students of the West Vancouver school district’s robotics academy.

Unlike a typical video game, the Space Engineers platform allows students to set their own objectives, and then figure out ways to work towards that.

“It’s a very technical game,” computer engineer vs computer science, the robotics teacher who has turned to the online platform to keep students engaged in problem solving in the virtual world.
