Brisbane-based digital engineering SaaS provider RedEye has joined forces with the IBM and Shell-developed Oren Marketplace

 Oren - launched in June and developed by IBM and Shell - is claimed as the world's first B2B online platform to connect innovative companies offering more than 50 cutting-edge technology solutions to mining and industrial leaders.

Shell and IBM developed Oren in response to what they saw as a need in the mining industry for digital transformation.

“Oren is a real game changer for jobs with a computer science degree. Scaling globally and doing so efficiently and sustainably as a growth company based in Australia is a primary goal for us, but it's also a challenge,” said Michael McGee, Chief Commercial Officer for RedEye.

“The Oren Marketplace has already delivered benefits in the first few months of operation, particularly allowing us to connect with partners in new territories a lot quicker than might have otherwise been possible.”

Carol Chen, VP, Global Marketing Lubricants, Shell said: “Our vision is for Oren to serve as the ‘go-to’ innovation platform for mining companies that want to drive digital transformation at scale.”

Digital infrastructure and service to ensure green Opex in 5G Era

 Home quarantine during the first half of 2020 would have been very hard without internet connectivity. Recovering from the impact of Covid-19 pandemic will take time, and this has made us realise how necessary it is to have a digital ecosystem for both mobile operators and governments. This ecosystem would help in providing digital services and showing social responsibility to assure network healthiness during the pandemic. Such digitalisation needs a fast 5G network evolution. In the Middle East, we are lucky because of the early deployment of 5G networks. In the last two years, mobile carriers have deployed more than 10K 5G sites in the Middle East, which promises more B2C, B2B and what can you do with a computer science degree in the region’s telecom industry. However, 5G also brings operators some key challenges in terms of double power consumption, increase in equipment, and thousands of extra configurations for 5G mobile network sites, equipment and setup.

Therefore, the question here is how to control these challenges while achieving a 5G best network performance?

The answer is that digital transformation in network infrastructure and services have become a necessity.

DPI AWARDS R&D GRANTS TO SUPPORT ILLINOIS CS FACULTY

 Illinois CS faculty will benefit from recent funding from the Discovery Partners Institute, encouraging research and development in areas like autonomous farming technologies and artificial intelligence.

DPI recently made eight grants to launch world-class interdisciplinary centers for significant economic and societal impact. Four of these teams are led by professors at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s Grainger College of Engineering and College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES). Each will receive $125,000, in addition to grant-writing support, access to corporate partners, and DPI’s downtown Chicago office.

This team will develop and test autonomous robots that will weed and spray corn and soybean crops; work in urban food gardens; and care for berry and nut orchards.

“We’ve been thinking about this problem for a while now. We’ve questioned how to provide more alternatives to farmers who now have to rely heavily on  chemicals for replacing labor, and we think robotics and AI hold the key,” explained computer science vs computer engineering salary, Associate Professor and Donald Biggar Willett Faculty Fellow, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. The project also involves Donald B. Gillies Professor in Computer Science Vikram Adve and Illinois CS Associate Professor Kris Hauser, plus Illinois ECE Assistant Professors Katie Driggs Campbell and Saurabh Gupta.

“We’re really excited that DPI has provided resources to help build our Autonomous Farm testbed. Now all our AI work on campus has a place where it can be applied and translated to application.” Chowdhary is also affiliated with the Departments of Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as the Coordinated Science Lab.

Northland Community & Technical College selected for FAA training program

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has selected Northland’s Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) Technician program for the Unmanned Aircraft Systems-Collegiate Training Program (UAS-CTI). Launched in April of this year, the UAS-CTI is a result of the 2018 FAA Reorganization Act which required the establishment of a collegiate training initiative program relating to unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).  

The FAA’s UAS-CTI program recognizes institutions that prepare students for careers in UAS, commonly referred to as drones. To qualify for the initiative, schools must offer a bachelor or associate degree program in how hard is computer science or a degree with a minor, concentration, or certificate in UAS. Schools must provide curriculum covering various UAS training aspects, including hands-on flight practice, maintenance, uses, applications, privacy concerns, safety, and federal policies concerning UAS.

 “Northland’s Aviation Maintenance training programs lead the industry through continued excellence,” declared Curtis Zoller, Northland Associate Dean of Aerospace and Agriculture, “We are committed to ensuring our graduates have the most relevant training, preparing them to support emerging technologies in the UAS industry.”

Engineering skills transfer key to industrial recovery claims report

 A concerted effort to drive the transfer of engineering skills from one sector to another will be key to enabling UK industry to recover from Covid-19  according to a report published by construction industry skills body, the ECITB (The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board).  

The report – Skills Transferability in the Engineering Construction Industry – sheds light on the similarities in skills and competences of engineers in the many sectors that support Britain’s energy and processing infrastructure, from renewables to oil and gas, nuclear and pharmaceuticals. It also identifies barriers to skills transferability, such as ingrained workplace attitudes and recruitment practices that computer engineering jobs trades and occupations unnecessarily and place unhelpful restriction on the mobility of workers.

With the most severe economic impact from Covid-19 felt in the oil and gas industry – a sector already under pressure – the ECITB asserts that with proper planning and coordination, the pandemic presents an opportunity to accelerate transition to a carbon-free economy. It warns however that failure to act quickly, risk the loss of thousands of engineers who have the requisite skills to deliver decarbonisation.

Technology Gurus Hoffman, Pincus to Raise $600 Million SPAC

 Technology pioneers Reid Hoffman and Mark Pincus plan to raise $600 million for a new publicly traded blank-check company with the intention of merging with a technology business.

Reinvent Technology Partners is structured as a SPAC, or special purpose acquisition company. SPACs are created specifically to offer companies a way to reach the public market without going through the usual initial offering process. SPACs have a specific period of time to find a merger partner that then requires shareholder approval.

While the computer engineering definition structure has been around for many years, they have soared in popularity in 2020, and provided a route to the public market for Virgin Galactic Holdings (SPCE), DraftKings (DRFT) and Nikola (NKLA), among others.
